This past Monday was one of the most productive Mondays that I have had in a while. I recorded three podcast episodes, wrote a blog, went to my college classes, and even cleaned my room. I conquered Monday.
You would think that I would have been happy by the amount that I accomplished in the day.
Monday night, I found myself laying in bed frustrated while I compared myself to another person that I respect for their podcast and books. I had this horrible feeling in my stomach that would not go away It was like that feeling you got as a child when you heard your mom or dad say they were disappointed in you. It was a horrible feeling.
“Ty, why are you even doing this?”
“Ty, why are you wasting your time on this stuff? You are not encouraging anyone.”
I was in an all-out war with myself. Would I let my fears and comparisons kill me or would I keep moving forward towards my dreams? On Monday night, I won. I chose to keep moving forward. I chose to not give up.
I wish I could say that I always have victory over these thoughts, but I can’t. I must admit that I have let countless days go by while I stand still, crippled by all of my fears. I have become all too familiar with the sound of my own voice being my worst enemy.
I have found that there is a common factor in all of those low moments:
I do not believe I am capable of doing something right or doing something that will help people.
I don’t know if you have ever found yourself in the same place. I don’t know if you have those low moments where you hear your own voice tearing you down. If you have been to this dark place, I want to offer you some encouragement.
Two truths to remind yourself of daily:
1. You are the best you!
I know this is one of the most cliché sayings around, but it is so true. You are the only you that exists. There is nobody on this planet that is just like you. You have your own fingerprint, your own brain, your own strengths, your own personality, your own habits and disciplines; YOU ARE UNIQUE.
Ty, you do know that there are a lot of people that have a lot in common, right? Having something in common does not mean it is the exact same. You can have a lot in common with a lot of people and still have your own experience, perspective, thoughts, behaviors, and beliefs. You are the only you that exists, EMBRACE IT!
2. You have a purpose!
You have not been created to merely suck in oxygen and eat food (although, food is awesome). You have been created to add a unique value to the world that only you can offer. You have not been placed here with the breath in your lungs to merely sit back and do nothing. You have been created on purpose for a purpose.
Ty, what difference could I possibly make? It’s easy to feel intimidated by the idea of purpose. Our purpose is not lived out in colosseums, fighting lions in front of thousands of people, but rather, our everyday interactions with the people around us. Your purpose is most lived out when you make someone feel like they are loved and they matter. It sounds simple because it is simple. The simplest act of kindness and love can make a profound impact on someone’s life.
You Are Your Worst Enemy:
As you try to live a confident, forward-moving life, you will find that you are usually your biggest critic. You will take a step forward and then torture yourself with statements like:
“You are wasting your time.”
“You will never get better.”
“I am not as good as them.”
“You are not making progress fast enough.”
I could give several more examples but let’s be honest, you already know what lies you tell yourself. You are aware of those statements you speak over yourself in moments of fear and insecurity.
In those moments, take a step back and speak those two truths over yourself; you are the best you and you have a purpose. In those Monday night moments, fight with everything in you to push through. Make a commitment to yourself to kill comparison anytime it appears from the shadows of your mind.
You can have victory today.
You can move forward today.
The world needs you to be the best you because you are the only you that it has. Fight to be you today, imperfections and all. Move forward and make a difference!
